Her first book, A Tree is Nice, was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1957 for Marc Simont's illustrations. She was born in Jacksonville, Illinois and graduated from Northwestern University in 1950. Janice May Udry (born 1928) is an American author. The dj is now protected in a newer mylar sleeve. A Very Good copy in an attractive dust jacket (even if flawed). Previous owner's name on the front paste down, and dated 1956. The paper boards have edge wear, with the tips rubbed through. The dj has a gold foil Caldecott award seal on the front panel. The dust jacket, priced at $2.50, is well preserved, with sharp edges and bright vibrant colors, but regrettably has had its rear flap cut away. This is the TRUE FIRST EDITION with the words Harper & Brothers printed on the title page and NOT Harper & Row found on later editions. Cloth backed paper illustrated boards in similarly illustrated dust jacket. Tall narrow 4to., chiefly illustrated with b&w and color drawings. A Very Good copy in Very Good dust jacket. His wife Sara Dalton, known as Bee and his sister Genevieve, known as Genny, were also present.

Simont signed this copy for me at his home in Cornwall, CT. Signed by Marc Simont on the watercolor illustration page prior to the frontispiece illustration, which faces the title page. The book is Very Good, the jacket is Near Fine. Price of $2.75 on front flap, 1st Printing was $2.50. The jacket has Harper & Row printed on the spine. This later issue jacket has the Caldecott Medallion on the front cover and is ¼ inch shorter than the first issue jacket. The first issue book had a black cloth spine with no lettering. The book states Harper & Brothers on the title page but Harper on the book spine. The binding is generally very clean with one stray 1 1/2 inch red pencil line. The top edge of the spine is worn, the bottom edge is rubbed. The spine lettering lists the title, Udry-Simont, and Harper. Binding in yellow illustrated cloth lettered in green and red with two drawn scenes of trees, one green, one red.
